How to pick colors from an image

  1. Upload a supported JPG or PNG image (max 5 MB).
  2. Drag a numbered picker handle to the area you want to sample.
  3. Read the HEX value shown on the handle and copy the selected color.
  4. Use the Export JSON, Export JPEG, or Save actions when you want to keep the results.

AI Extract and Save require signing in. AI Extract is limited for free accounts and expanded for Pro members. Manual sampling and copying work without signing in.

Extract a color palette from a photo

There are two ways to collect colors from the same image. Dragging handles lets you sample specific locations precisely. The AI Extract action produces an automatic palette that summarizes the most visually dominant tones across the image.

An extracted palette summarizes the image; it does not necessarily include every visible color. Use manual handles when you need a specific spot, and AI Extract when you want a quick overall summary to start from.

From image colors to a usable palette

Colors sampled or extracted from a photo are a starting point for website, illustration, or brand exploration. Open the result in Color Studio to refine the combination, or browse Discover for related palettes.

Colors taken from a photograph still need contrast checks before they are used for text. A background that looks clear in the photo can fail readability once text is placed on it, so verify each text and background pair with the Contrast Checker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a HEX color from an image?
Upload a supported image, then drag a numbered picker handle to the area you want to sample. The handle shows the HEX value at that spot, and you can copy it with the copy action next to the selected color.
Can I extract several colors instead of picking one?
Yes. You can drag multiple handles to sample several specific spots, or use the AI Extract action to generate a palette that summarizes the dominant colors in the image. Manual sampling picks exact locations; AI Extract produces an automatic summary of the image.
Which image files can I upload?
The picker accepts JPG and PNG image files, with a maximum file size of 5 MB. Files outside these formats or over the size limit are rejected.
Why might a picked color differ from the color I expected?
The exact pixel value can be affected by where the handle lands, image compression, resizing, and the browser's color handling. The tool reads the displayed pixels, so it does not recover an original brand specification or a different color space from the file.
Can I use an extracted palette for accessible text?
No. Palette extraction only collects colors; it does not establish readable text contrast. Before using a picked or extracted color for text, check the text and background combination with the Contrast Checker.
